The Cathedral Crystal Crosses

Designed to feel like jeweled relics discovered inside an old European chapel, The Cathedral Crystal Crosses pair luminous faceted crystal with the beautifully imperfect, hand-worked finishes of Michelle Butler Designs.

Each cross is constructed from oversized smoky-clear faceted crystals that catch and reflect the light from every angle. Vintage-inspired rhinestone jewelry, dimensional crystal clusters, pearls, and delicate silver-toned embellishments have been layered by hand across the crosses, transforming them from simple decorative objects into pieces that feel almost ceremonial.

The contrast is what makes these so striking. The cool brilliance of the crystal and rhinestones sits above bases finished in warm ivory, champagne, antique gold, and irregular touches of metallic leaf. Rather than a perfectly polished finish, the vessels have been intentionally layered and distressed, allowing visible brushwork, tonal variation, and imperfect areas of gold to become part of the artwork.

Each cross sits atop a completely different vessel, giving the two pieces distinctly different silhouettes. The larger sculpture has a graceful rounded form and elongated neck, while the smaller piece has a substantial squared bottle with an exceptionally ornate, jewelry-encrusted collar.

They were designed to coordinate beautifully without ever feeling like a matching set.

Details

Each sculpture features a dimensional faceted crystal cross embellished by hand with vintage-inspired rhinestones, crystal jewelry, pearls, metallic trims, and individually selected decorative elements.

The bases are hand-finished in layers of warm ivory, champagne, aged metallics, and gold leaf. The larger vessel features a softly organic, rounded silhouette, while the smaller vessel is finished with an elaborate jeweled collar that creates an almost crown-like transition between the bottle and cross.

Because of the faceted surfaces and extensive jewelry work, these pieces change beautifully throughout the day. In softer light they feel aged and architectural; when the crystals catch direct light, the crosses take on an entirely different brilliance.

Styling

Although introduced as part of the Fall 2026 Collection, these were intentionally created as pieces that do not need to be put away when the season ends.

Display one on its own as a statement object, place it on a stack of antique books, or incorporate it into a collected console, mantel, entryway, or bookshelf arrangement. They pair especially beautifully with antique frames, old books, architectural fragments, candlelight, and other Michelle Butler Designs pieces.

The scale makes either one substantial enough to stand alone, while the different heights and silhouettes make the two particularly beautiful displayed together.

Every Michelle Butler Designs piece is individually created by hand from a collection of found vessels, jewelry, crystals, embellishments, and decorative elements. The original character of each object is intentionally incorporated into the finished artwork rather than disguised.

Variations in texture, brushwork, distressing, gold leaf, jewelry placement, crystal shape, and finish are intentional and make each sculpture completely unique.
